Trout is one of the most popular fish species among fishermen. To catch it, the most effective technique is fly fishing. In order not to come back empty-handed, it is important to know the right things to do. Here are some tips for successful trout fly fishing.
What is fly fishing?
Fly fishing is a widely used technique to catch trout. As its name suggests, it consists of using an artificial fly to bait the fish. Depending on the lure used, this method has different variants. Dry fly fishing uses a floating artificial fly called the dry fly. With this technique, it is easy to bait the trout that eats the insect on the surface of the water. Nymph fly fishing uses a submerged lure in the shape of a larva. Drowned fly fishing seduces trout with a fake fly that is immersed in the water. Finally, fly fishing with a streamer consists of using a bait that imitates a fish.
How to animate the lure to catch trout?
To attract trout, it is important that the artificial bait perfectly mimics the movements of the insect on which the trout feeds. To do this, its color and size must be identical. As for the animation, it depends on the technique to be adopted. For dry fly fishing, the lure must be placed naturally on the surface of the water: it must be placed gently and precisely.
For the drowned fly method, after casting the bait, it must be allowed to sink. The rod must be used to direct the drift. It is important to vibrate the tip with small movements. The rod must be lifted as long as the lure is downstream.
When adopting the streamer technique, place the fly close to the edge and wait for it to sink. The current brings the silk until the tip of the rod is near the surface. It must be moved quickly 30 to 50 cm downstream. The bait must then be returned to its original position. These movements mimic a fleeing fish. If there is no attack, it is best to go a little further downstream.
Which materials to use?
To catch trout in rivers, the ideal is to use a rod measuring between 7 and 11 feet or between 2.30 m and 3.60 m. The shorter one is perfect for fishing in small streams. As for the wider one, it adapts to the large river. As for the line, it is better to use the one that loads the rod better, this makes it possible to make a good throw. For the leader, it is advisable to adopt one measuring between 3.5 and 4.5 meters. Finally, for the tips, it is necessary to choose between 16 to 10 ° depending on the size of the lure.
