Trap fishing for lobster

Trap fishing for lobster

A crustacean whose reputation is well established; lobsters enjoy an incredible reputation thanks to their succulent flesh. Located in its claws and abdomen, its edible parts represent only 30% of its weight. Nevertheless, lobster is highly prized by all, and has long been the subject of great covetousness and an ancestral fishery: that of the trap.

What is a trap and what is its interest?

Traps are snare of different shapes made of a rigid frame (wood, plastic or steel) covered with a net or wire mesh to form a cage.
Signaled on the surface by a wet buoy at each end, the traps are weighted with a block of cement to rest on the bottom.
With a funnel-shaped device called a chute, it makes it easier for the animal to enter but hinders its exit. Only small juveniles (less than 8.7 cm) can then escape through the escape hatch provided for this purpose. Selective and respectful of habitats, the traps also have the advantage of returning on board crustaceans of very good quality because they remain alive.

What bait should be used to fish lobster by trap?

In order to attract lobsters, a bait placed indoors gives off a strong odor in the water. Suspended in the central part of the bin, the bait can be held in the chute with an elastic band and a hook or placed in a bag (a small mesh bag). Called the box, this bait can consist of different fresh or salted fish such as red mullet, horse mackerel, old mackerel, gurnard, hake or starfish, sea bream and dogfish.

Where and how to wet your trap to fish lobster?

The trap should not be placed on the rock but against it because lobsters usually make their hole (often in a crevasse or between two rocks lined with sand). Slide your trap onto the sand and place it against the rock identified by a depth sounder. To do this, provide at least twice the height of water at high tide at the fishing site. Mooring and wiring are done by motor (at a speed of 2 to 3 knots) from the side or in slow forward motion from the rear. In case of an accident, it is advisable to use the motor to disengage the trap, but beware, it is a dangerous operation that requires a lot of caution.

When and for how long to practice this technique?

When the water is warm, during the months of May, June and July, lobsters take advantage of the nightfall to leave their shelter in search of food.
To capture them, it is therefore necessary to wet your traps for a full night: the turn (the action of raising them) is therefore practiced 24 hours after the wiring.
