Float fishing (plug)

Float fishing (plug)

Fishing can be a fun, sporting and beneficial activity. A thrill across the line, a beautiful specimen to go up, it's every fisherman's dream. Float fishing, or also plug fishing, is a fishing technique that can hit the mark if you know it well and master it.

The principle of float fishing

Float fishing is a technique that began hundreds of years ago. This technique allows you to have nice shots with very little material: the rod, the wire, the plug and a hook and the lead. The float serves as both a touch indicator and a line stabilizer, regardless of the height of the fishing. It is the plug that prevents the hook from sinking to the bottom of the water while avoiding the target to feel the resistance of the line and the lead. A float consists of an antenna, the body of the float itself and a keel.

What type of plug should I use?

Most often, children are introduced to fishing with a line fitted with a plug, but this discipline is nowadays a high-level fishing technique, requiring advanced knowledge.
It is essential to know how to choose a plug. This choice is based on the type of fish targeted, the characteristics of the water, but also the climatic conditions.
Tapered floats will be used to fish in calm waters such as ponds, canals and other stations with slow currents. These are the fusiform caps, such as carrots or matches.
The floats called "water drop" are in the form of a ball, pear type, or elongated water drop. Providing good wave stability, they are ideal for shoreline fishing, with moderate currents such as rivers, streams or other types of more or less rough water.
For fishing in waters with stronger currents, flat floats are the most suitable, as they allow the fishing to be carried out by blocking the float in the current.

Bait for float fishing

Many baits can be used for plug fishing. The first type that comes to mind are marine worms, also called semi-hard or hard. The bait is chosen according to the type of fish desired. They are very varied: doughs made from flour that can be made yourself, bread crumbs, shelled mussels, seaweed, machottes, shrimps (animated or not), sardines and many other possibilities.
To avoid making mistakes, it is better to fish with someone who has experience in float fishing or take a few courses. And as always, be patient !
