If you don’t know how to fish for Pollack, below are some technique that you can use.
Fishing for pollack by boat
This is the most common way to fish for pollack, as a multitude of pollack fish can be found in the depths, in rocks, wrecks or kelp. Depending on different factors (type of bottom, fishing season, surrounding natural environment, etc.), various techniques can be used.
Fishing the pollack with heavy trawl
Heavy trawl is practiced far from the coast, at the level of obstacles and rocky landmarks. You must then seal your line to get it near rocks and wrecks, which can be up to 50 meters deep. This technique is easier to apply when there are two of you - a pilot and a fisherman - in a calm sea. The drag speed must be between 2 and 3 knots (do not slow the boat down when it is caught, this would cause a slackness that could break the line or block the lead in rocks).
Drifting for pollack
As its name suggests, drift fishing simply consists of letting go in the direction of the wind or current, to meet the fish: the wind forces are based on the emerged part of the boat and the current forces on the submerged part (as they are not equal, these two opposite forces will initially turn the boat until it finds its equilibrium point). One of the crucial elements for the success of this fishery is a millimeter-long and silent passage above or near the fish area. If the wind starts to force, it is advisable to use a floating anchor (which will allow the boat to drift less to the wind, its attachment point also allowing the boat to vary its orientation on the water, for more comfortable fishing). In another case where the current would be too strong, it will be necessary to drop a chain or a grapple anchor until the bottom is scraped, which will execute a very useful braked drift (this will allow a very discreet presentation of the boat's lines in the water). This practice is most commonly used for wreck fishing.
Fishing for the pollack on the edge
Even if the environment preferred by the pollack is deeper, it is still possible to fish on the edge. In this fishery, making it bite is not the most difficult thing. However, this complicates the interest in the lure. You can find the smallest pollack near the surface, especially at the end of summer; it is not advisable to fish them: first of all, it is not uncommon for fish of this small size to die while engaging your lure. Secondly, they are the first to attack the lure on its descent, which complicates things a little and forces you to control the descent. It is therefore advisable to use a lure similar to the fish larvae present in the area. Finally, for those who prefer to fish the pollack during the day, it is recommended to choose an area where there is current and algae, the pollack can hide among the kelp. In this type of area, try to come when the current forms, and examine the area first between two waters (the area will easily rise to the lure if they have started to feed), then it is best to give regular swings with breaks. Finally, it is important to remember that the place can bite when the lure descends, hence the importance of controlling it, which could spare the animal at the same time.
