Trolling for squid

Trolling for squid

Increasingly popular and used in the Mediterranean, the slow trolling troll to fish squid is ideal for quickly spotting the behavior of the banks in a defined area.
Popular, easy and productive, this technique has the advantage of giving excellent results in winter, both during the day and at night. Indeed, these cephalopods have excellent night vision, so it is generally at night that they leave in large numbers to hunt small fish.

How fast can squid troll?

The trolling speed can be between 3 and 7 knots. Nevertheless, a slow troll of 1 to 3 knots will considerably increase your chances of catching as many squids as possible.
It should also be noted that it is not necessary to drag very far from your boat, a distance of between 10 and 50 m is required! Everything will then depend on the number of rods you have chosen.

At what depth should squid be dragged?

The purpose of this fishing technique is to target specimens that move up into the upper water layers to feed. However, it is still interesting to prospect different layers to find out at which level squids move.
Between 1 m and 20 m, squid can be fished at all depths but be aware that by coastal sled, swimming your lures in just a few meters deep (about 5 or 6) is generally very effective!

What equipment should be used to troll for squid?

- A classic, solid throwing rod with a power of between 12 and 20 lbs;
- A 3000/4000 reel with a 30/100 or maximum 60/100 nylon yarn or even braid (but you lose elasticity and risk falling off);
- A 25/100 fluorocarbon lead.
- Your bib jig (to help you select them, do not hesitate to consult the article dedicated to the choice of the jig).

Which jigs should be used for trolling squid?

Without a doubt, bib jigs seem to be the most appropriate. Similar to swimming fish, they are equipped with a basket composed of several spikes that allow a good grip on the squid's tentacles.

What setting should be used to fish squid by trolling?

Used alone as the terminal of your line, your flap jig must be accompanied by a 30 or 60g lead or a line diver so that it can reach greater depths. In which case, another technique consists in preceding it with traditional jigs and squid. It is recommended to use a staple at the end of your setting to allow you to easily change the size or color of your lure according to the weather conditions.
