The Bichi-Bachi

The Bichi-Bachi

Straight from Japan, Eging is the name given to fishing with jigging cephalopods, more commonly known as squids (i. e. squid, cuttlefish and octopus). Among the techniques that this term covers is the Bichi-Bachi.

What is the animation technique to practice the Bichi-Bachi?

Its name was given by Yamashita (the manufacturer whose effective jigs everyone competes for). Inspired by the onomatopoeia characteristic of the sound emitted by the double whip of the rod during the animation, the Bichi-Bachi is practiced without chi-chi but with a few good hours of practice!
This formidable technique, both energetic and fun, gives excellent results from the edge because it allows you to quickly find beautiful specimens by prospecting different layers of water.
Generally, we start the prospecting from the bottom:
- Throw and let your leaded jig sink until you reach the bottom;
- Start your movement pointing to the water;
- Give 2 to 3 sharp and fast saw cuts (jerks) from top to bottom and in a vertical plane with maximum amplitude to animate the jig;
- With your wrist increase the movement from slightly broken down to broken up;
- Alternate these lashes with stopping times while keeping in touch with your lure;
- Lower your jig to the bottom again and repeat the operation until the squid bites!
Don't forget to take breaks by keeping your banner semi-tensioned during the descent, which will allow your lure to evolve slowly. It is usually during this phase, when the lure stops or falls into the water, that the attack occurs.
If this technique may seem a little brutal, be assured, it has the advantage of being very attractive for cephalopods that seem particularly sensitive to movement.

Which equipment should be used for the Bichi-Bachi?

Usually, it is advisable to use a rod with a size between 1.90 m and 2.70 m and a power of between 10 and 50 g. As far as the reel is concerned, a model of size 2000 or even 2500 equipped with a crosswise spiral winding is perfectly adequate to allow a 10/100 or 13/100 braid to be added.
