The sea bream approaches the coast when the waters warm up in summer and autumn. It is most often support-fished by boat: a technique that originates from the longline. It consists in equipping a line with a lead and several hook. This setting is then allowed to sink to the bottom and the wire is kept taut until it feels a continuous touch before being fully tightened.
Which positions to choose to fish for the black sea bream using this technique?
Between 15 and 30 m deep, hollows composed of gravel and shells not far from rocky piles, sandy or mixed bottoms (scattered rocks and sand) are the preferred sites for black sea bream.
However, the fishing depth can vary according to the tide: even if the sea bream can be fished on both ebb and flood tides, you must modify the depth but also adapt your installation according to the variations in the current.
Should I fish drift or anchor?
Although the support fishing is carried out either drifting or anchoring, in this case, it is the anchoring that is preferable. As this fish is chewing and slow to decide to catch the bait, it is better to locate a school and stand there.
How to start?
Once your boat is anchored, you must start with a pierced jute bag filled with a preparation made from crushed sardines called strum or scrambled (depending on the region). Leaded and held by a cord, the device gradually diffuses the mixture that causes the sea bream to rise on the lines immersed in the effluvium of the primer.
What equipment should be used to fish for the sea bream to support?
A short-nosed tip rod (3 m maximum) with a soft tip - a 4000 reel - hooks 2/0 or 1/0 - braid.
Which baits should be used to fish for the sea bream to support?
Although very greedy, the black sea bream is suspicious and demanding. Prefer by far fresh bait such as squid, shell, sardine, mackerel, lugworm, American worm or Bibi. When properly presented, your bait should wave in the current to attract and fool your prey.
Which setting should I choose?
As you may have guessed, the black sea bream requires a certain finesse in its assembly. Use of a slide-in train, stacks above the terminal lead: the most important thing is to be discreet, fish close to the bottom and use hooks adapted to the small mouth of the sea bream!
