Trolling for Mahi Mahi

Trolling for Mahi Mahi

This magnificent warm-water fish, with its green and turquoise color mixed with subtle golden stroke, is one of the most beautiful fish you can catch.

Where to catch Mahi Mahi?

Reaching 2 m in height and weighing 35 kg, this carnivore is an incredible specimen that combines power and speed. During the fighting, it showed exceptional defense and made many particularly spectacular jumps out of the water.

The Mahi Mahi lives offshore and rarely comes close to the coast. It evolves near the surface (rarely below 50 m deep), hidden under wrecks and floating objects such as wood, drift nets, plastic waste, etc.
These objects are idyllic signs of presence for fishermen because it is very common for several Mahi Mahi to be found there and to enjoy small fish and crustaceans that are also present.
When to fish for Mahi Mahi by trolling?
In the Mediterranean, the Mahi Mahi is caught mainly from June to September, a fan of hot water, the months of July and August being obviously the most favorable months!
Then enjoy the sunrise and sunset. As with many predators, the Mahi Mahi sets out in search of food during these times of the day.

Surprise: several takes at once!

The Mahi-Mahi is often fished during a train of lures intended for other pelagic such as marlin, tuna, and other sailfish. Voracious, it does not hesitate to attack very large lures (even as imposing as it!).
Another possibility to take a series of shots, over shots: the Mahi Mahi is very frequently followed by its congeners. Your first catch can then attract the other bream. It is therefore clever to put other lines in the water, next to the first Mahi Mahi. Even better: if you fish first for a male (which is distinguished by a very prominent and straight forehead), it is very likely to attract its females!

Which lures should be used to fish for Mahi Mahi?

Surface lures, stick bait, popper, paetas, piping jets, bib swimming fish (more occasionally), Mahi Mahi is so greedy that it has the advantage of being easily caught by any kind of the lures!
