If there is a bait that squid can't resist, it's sardine! This cephalopod is fond of this dish; it doesn't hesitate to literally rush on it. So, let's not deprive ourselves of this ancestral trick to capture the squid that could well avoid some other lures.
Fishing squid with a can
Straight from Nice, this simple technique is the best technique. All you need is a little equipment, patience and it's in the box!
To do this, bring a tin can, a wooden handle to be attached to it with a nail, nylon wire (about 100 m), a swivel clip and a landing net.
The goal is simply to place the sardine, tied by a wire and equipped with a hook, on the bottom, about 2 m from the edge.
The remaining wire is then wrapped around a tin can, which serves both as a reserve but also and above all as a key detector to warn you at the slightest catch.
If it moves, bring your loot back to the edge by pulling slowly on the line. As squid tend to let go easily when it comes out of the water, this is the most delicate part.
Once you are within reach, the last step is to put the squid back into your landing net.
Another trick, the squid being very sensitive to colors and light, it may be appropriate to add to your assembly a polystyrene ball to which a starlight will be attached: this float will most certainly allow you to increase your chances!
Fishing for squid with a cage jig
As squid do not resist an inert sardine that does not require any effort to be tasted, the sardine cage is an easy and effective system.
This technique, which is similar to a float or wedge fishing, is practiced using a long and powerful rod.
The principle is to place a sardine in a dedicated stainless steel cage.
It is a matter of putting everything on the bottom or supporting it between two waters with a luminous float and raising your cage by waddling.
In case of a catch, the challenge is then to raise the squid without giving it time to escape: you must then put all your energy and determination into it.
And above all, don't forget that squid expels ink jets, it stains!
