Trolling for Mackerel

Trolling for Mackerel

Mackerel evolve in schools. The challenge is to find the benches. A seagull bite may eventually help you, but the easiest way is to use a sonar. Mackerel move to a depth that varies with water temperature, weather conditions and water transparency.
In general, mackerel will be found on the surface in calm weather and when the water is clear enough. On the contrary, when the sea is rough, they will tend to move between two waters, or even into deep waters.
Once the school is spotted, all you have to do is turn around the seagulls, trying to anticipate the trajectory of the school so that the mackerel can be found on your line. Mackerel are not shy, if they are there, they will bite without delay.

The fishing

You can have a drag speed varying between 2 and 5 knots, depending on the wind and currents.
It is very common, if you pass well in the school, to take several mackerel at a time (there are sometimes some on all hooks!).
Advice from expert:
Whether you fish by hand line or rod, make small back and forth movements with the line to move the lures forward in a somewhat erratic and therefore more realistic way.

Setting

Hand line
So we hang a paravane on the train line. It is then necessary to hang a fluorocarbon wire (35 hundredths) of a length of about 5 to 7 loads (in order to keep the lures away from the vibration of the paravane). On this wire, we hang a machine gun. The machine gun is a train of several multicoloured feathers (3 to 7) equipped with hooks and mounted in gallows every 50 centimeters on a robust nylon. It has the advantage of deceiving mackerel by simulating the activity of a school of fish. At the end of this machine gun you can add another 3 loads of 35 hundredths of fluorocarbon to attach a spoon to it at the end. This will make it possible to catch bigger mackerel, but above all, to take a possible bar that would roam around! You can be inventive and put a hard lure, a slug in place of the spoon...
Rod
Mounting is easier and will be more efficient on the surface. You need to have fluorocarbon on your reel in 35 hundredths to which you will attach a machine gun. At the end of the machine gun, you will have the possibility to put a flexible lure with a more or less leaded head depending on the depth you want to reach. You can also put a swimmer fish with a more or less long bib. You can fish for mackerel and sea bass.
