Trolling for barracuda
Would you like to know everything about trolling barracuda fishing? This article is made for you!
Introduction
In French waters, the barracuda measures an average of 50 cm, but in the tropics, it is possible to find incredible specimens that can reach 3 m and 50 kg!
Fast and voracious, its defense is not vigorous but its attack can be brutal and its rushes powerful! With its impressive sharp teeth, it is likely to do a lot of damage to your equipment, person or boat.
Trolling with swimming fish and whistle-blowers is undeniably the most interesting technique if your equipment is adapted: be careful with breakage!
Where and when to troll for barracuda?
At daybreak and at nightfall, when the barracuda goes hunting with its congeners, catches are more frequent.
This fearsome predator is particularly fond of ports and their surroundings, estuaries and river mouths. Between rocky coasts and beach sides, this open-water fish likes to alternate its hunting areas.
What type of boat should be used and at what speed?
At a speed of between 6 and 9 knots, the coastal train can be satisfied with a boat even if it is slightly motorized.
With lures dragged 20-30 m from the boat, it is possible to have 4: two at long distance, one at medium distance and finally, the last one at short distance because it is common for a barracuda to attack a lure dragged by the swirling propellers of the boat.
What equipment should be used to fish for barracuda by trolling?
- A balanced drag rod and drag reel unit with a power of 20 to 50 lbs.
- A nylon between 40/100 and 60/100 with a steel leader (mandatory because simple nylon would not resist!)
What are the most effective lures?
Barracuda seems to have a preference for white or pearly lures. However, her tastes can easily vary according to her mood, appetite and desires. Fortunately, many lures seem to be effective for its fishing. Do not hesitate to diversify them during your outings to be able to easily adapt if necessary:
- Swimming fish between 12 and 20 cm
- Rapala
- Whistling jet
- Popper
- Stickbait
