The Dab fish belongs to the Pleuronectidae family. It has an average size of 25 to 40 cm with an average weight of 1 kg. It has a lifespan of 12 years. The Dab fish breeds from February to April. The female lay up to 150,000 oocytes. The Dab fishing is open from October to Mars. the minimum catch size is 25 cm.
The Dab fish, scientifically named Limanda Limanda, is a teleosteal species that belongs to the pleuronectidae or flatfish family. It has a flattened body with a more or less oval shape. The eyes of this dexterous fish are both generally located on the right side. The animal has a tiny mouth with small teeth. Its lateral line is curved at the pectoral fin. A characteristic feature that allows it to be easily distinguished from other species with similar morphology such as flounder. Thin scales cover the upper surface of the flounder, making its skin rough to the touch. The back is golden or yellowish brown in color and has dark spots. The belly or blind face is white. Varying from beige to light brown, the general color of dab allows it to blend in with the backgrounds.
The Dab Fish lifestyle
Concerning its diet, it is mainly marine worms, echinoderms and bottom organisms. It feeds on shrimp, small crabs, but also small fish.
Males are mature around 2 years (12cm) and females around 3 years (12-16cm). Reproduction takes place from February to April. It lays up to 150,000 eggs in open water, and the eggs rise to the surface. Young fry drift in the plankton, moving sideways as soon as they are 2 cm long. When they have changed their appearance, they leave the surface to land on the seabed. Growth is slow, a little faster for females, and longevity would be 12 years.
The Dab Fish Habitat
The Dab fish enjoy cold sea waters with sandy bottoms. This flatfish species rarely comes to the tidal zone and does not like rough waters. It is specifically abundant in the North Sea; it is also found in the English Channel and the Atlantic.
It lives at depths ranging from 20 to 150 meters.
The Dab Fish Angling
The Dab Fish are caught by boat or surfcasting, literally "throwing into the wave" which consists of fishing from the rocks or from the beach. The Dab fish are also caught in bottom trawls. Concerning bait, marine worms give excellent results when fishing for the dab fish. You can also use a small soft lure or spoon-fish it as the dab is fond of small fish.
This flatfish is caught from early October to March, with December being the best time.
